DATE OF MOH ACTION: 30/11/1864 Honey Hill, Jasper County, South Carolina.

 

Civil War Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. Captain in the first regiment of colored soldiers (Mass 55th); promoted to that office from rank as private, for which enlisted, Aug 4, 1862, in consideration of his saving the life of Col. Hartwell, by carrying him off the field when wounded. He received the Medal of Honor for his Civil War heroism of rescuing his Colonel under fire. The Medal was awarded in 1895.

 

MOH CITATION:

 

Under a heavy fire carried his wounded commanding officer from the field.

 

BURIAL LOCATION: MOUNTAIN VIEW CEMETERY, ALTADENA, CALIFORNIA.
