DATE OF MOH ACTION: 22/04/1914 Veracruz, Mexico.

 

Lieutenant Commander Johnston was also awarded the Navy Cross during his service. A career Naval officer, he graduated from the USNA in 1895, rose to the rank of Rear-Admiral, and fought in thePhilippine Insurrection, the Boxer Rebellion and World War I.

 

Mexican Campaign Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. Served as a Lieutenant Commander in the UnitedStates Navy during the 1914 Vera Cruz, Mexico Campaign. He was awarded the CMOH for his bravery on April 22, 1914. His Medal was issued on December 4, 1915.

 

MOH CITATION:

 

For distinguished conduct in battle, engagement of Vera Cruz, 22 April 1914; was regimental adjutant, and eminent and conspicuous in his conduct. He exhibited courage and skill in leading his men through the action of the 22d and in the final occupation of the city.
