He was born on the "Louisiana", his father's merchant ship, during one of its voyages in the English Channel. Before the Civil War, he worked as a shipping merchant. Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General, Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. Served in the Civil War as an aide to 4 different Union Generals (of whom, two were Generals Joseph Hooker and George G. Meade), and as a field officer in first the 12th, then the 5th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiments. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his part in preventing Union troops from firing on one another at the Battle of Resaca, Ga. (May 15, 1864). Brevetted Brigadier General, USV on March 8, 1865.
While acting as aide assisted in preventing a disaster caused by Union troops firing into each other.
