DATE OF MOH ACTION: 17/09/1862 Antietam, Maryland.

 

An 1854 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, he became a Captain in the 2nd United States Regular Artillery upon the outbreak of the Civil War. He commanded Battery G, 2nd United States Artillery at the July 1861 First Battle of Bull Run before being promoted to Lieutenant Colonel of Volunteers and made an Assistant Adjutant General on the staff of Major General Don Carlos Buell. Later assigned to the staff of Major General William B. Franklin, he was serving as Chief of Staff for the VI Corps at the September 17, 1862 Battle of Antietam, Maryland.

 

Reverting back to the Regular Army, he was promoted to Major and served as the Assistant Adjutant General for the Department of the Missouri though the end of the war. He remained in the Regular Army post-war, and retired with the rank of Colonel in 1897. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Regular Army on March 13, 1865 for "gallant and meritorious services during the war".
