b. 24/07/1843 Stanford in the Vale, Oxfordshire.  d. 03/12/1926 Detroit, Michigan.

 

DATE OF MOH ACTION: 01/10/1864 Chattahoochee River, Georgia.

 

Civil War Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. Enlisted as a Private in Company D, 13th Michigan Volunteer Infantry on February 1, 1862. Promoted to Corporal on August 31, 1862, and to Sargent on April 1, 1863. He was wounded and taken prisoner at the Battle of Chickamauga, Georgia on September 20, 1863. He was confined in the Confederate prisons of Richmond, Danville and Andersonville, and escaped on September 10, 1864 at Macon, Georgia.

 

MOH CITATION:

 

While an escaped prisoner of war within the enemy's lines witnessed an important movement of the enemy, and at great personal risk made his way through the enemy's lines and brought news of the movement to Sherman's army.
