DATE OF MOH ACTION: 11/02/1865 Aiken, South Carolina.

 

Civil War Congressional Medal of Honor recipient. AKA: Jacobus W. Tobin, served as a Sergeant, Company C, 9th Michigan Cavalry. At Aiken, South Carolina, February 11, 1865 his company was in retreat of a Confederate advance. At his own risk, he returned in the face of the enemy and rescued Major William C. Stevens, Cavalry Commander, who had been thrown from his horse.

 

MOH CITATION:

 

Voluntarily and at great personal risk returned, in the face of the advance of the enemy, and rescued from impending death or capture, Maj. William C. Stevens, 9th Michigan Cavalry, who had been thrown from his horse.
