DATE OF MOH ACTION: 29/09/1864 Chapin's Farm, Virginia.

 

Civil War Congressional Medal of Honor recipient. He enlisted in the Union Army at the age of 24, and was mustered in as a Private in Company E, 158th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry on August 31, 1862. Promoted to Corporal on January 15, 1864, he fought in the September 29, 1864 Battle of Chapins Farm, Virginia, and was awarded the CMOH for his bravery there.

 

His Medal was awarded to him on April 6, 1865, and he was honorably mustered out on service on June 30, 1865.

 

MOH CITATION:

 

The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Private George M. Grueb, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 29 September 1864, while serving with Company E, 158th New York Infantry, in action at Chapin's Farm, Virginia, for gallantry in advancing to the ditch of the enemy's works.
