DATE OF MOH ACTION: 25/11/1863 Missionary Ridge, Tennessee.
He enlisted in the Union Army on April 26, 1861, and was mustered in as a Private in Company H, 11th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Promoted to Corporal on September 1, 1862, he would be awarded the CMOH for his heroism at the Battle of Missionary Ridge, Tennessee on November 25, 1863. He served a full three years in the field, and was honorably mustered out upon the expiration of his term of enlistment on June 11, 1864. His Medal was awarded to him on January 12, 1892, twenty nine years later.
The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Corporal George Green, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 25 November 1863, while serving with Company H, 11th Ohio Infantry, in action at Missionary Ridge, Tennessee. Corporal Green scaled the enemy's works and in a hand-to-hand fight helped capture the flag of the 18th Alabama Infantry (Confederate States of America).
